If you're craving Italian food in Little Italy, make a note of Piccolo Forno. We went without a reservation and were served quickly; from the start, the service was excellent.

We ordered lasagna and pasta. The lasagna was amazing and became our favorite dish of the meal; we also really enjoyed the pasta. To top it all off, we shared cannoli and tiramisu, two very tempting desserts to end our visit.

We were delighted to find an authentic Italian restaurant right in the heart of Little Italy, with delicious food and such friendly and efficient service. We left thrilled and highly recommend it.
As an east coast Italian visiting SF for the first time, Piccolo Forno is definitely approved and would go back. I gave up on trying to find good Italian food in the northern Virginia area (besides my family’s). This was a breath of fresh air.
After searching for a highly rated Italian restaurant, I settled on PF. I went early, around 4:30-4:45. Stood at the doorway for a good 5 minutes watching the workers from behind the bar and the kitchen stare at me. Almost walked away. Finally seated, again left as if I was non-existent. Someore people walked in, got seated, got water and ordered drinks before I was even acknowledged. The place was filling up now...
Was not aware of any special until after I ordered and heard them tell People on both side of me what the daily specials were. Again, I felt like I was non-existent. I got sliced loaf bread, some people had a different bread(not specialty). Ordered arugula salad & was never offered pepper but the neighboring table was. Ordered papardelle Ragu. It was delicious. Food was excellent but service was pitiful on the whole.
So authentic! The lasagna was incredible! The piznas were so delicious. Reminds us of Italy.
Great place you must try the burrata with fresh prosciutto and the spaghetti a la carbonara
Summary:
- Recommended
- Best Italian cuisine in SF
- Around $50 with a bottle of wine, and
- Up to 15-min wait

I probably wouldn’t have tried this restaurant if it weren’t for the fact that a Bay Area local suggested it, as it’s a bit removed from the main restaurant scene (2 blocks away). There was a traditional wait in line, and we waited about 10–15 minutes.

The food was amazing, with great flavors without the heavy seasoning. All of us, being Asian, thoroughly enjoyed the flavors without feeling the need to add any seasoning to the dishes. This is the best Italian food I’ve had in SF and the North Bay so far, and yes, I’ve tried plenty of Italian and French restaurants around here. Whenever possible, look out for a dish that’s not on the menu. If you know, you know.

The service was friendly, perhaps a little too friendly, and impressively fast.

The interior was dimly lit, with a bit of smoke from the pizza oven. We sat outside on a cloudy day and still had a lovely time. Luckily, there was no wind!

Highly recommend! I’ve also recommended this place to two other people, and they were just as delighted by how good the food was.
I wish I could give more than 5 stars. Very small space and there’s almost always a line so be prepared to wait. It’s worth it. Even the complementary bread and olive/balsamic oil blend was fantastic. Lobster ravioli was sweet and creamy. Hubs absolutely loved his carbonara and affogato. The chocolate puffs were really good and would be great to split. Our server was a gem and had a great sense of humor.
Excellent Italian restaurant. Highly recommended. We had the amatriciana and the pumpkin ravioli with butter and sage... everything was excellent. We loved the torta della nonna and the authentic Italian coffee. The Italian restaurateurs were friendly and welcoming. I would go back.
Piccolo Forno may be an intimate, cozy spot, but everything about the experience is top-notch. The service was friendly, caring, and remarkably efficient from the moment we walked in. The food was simply outstanding - the Alfredo pasta was rich, creamy, and to die for, the pizza had the ultimate crispy crust, and the salad was vibrant and super fresh. Best of all, even our kids finished every single bite on their plates! A true must-visit in the city for anyone who loves Italian food. We will definitely be back.
Excellent service and remarkably delicious food, I’m in Sicily every winter for 2 months so I eat real Italian food so my standards are high, also my Sicilian mother was an excellent cook. This food at Piccolo Forno is a must do! I got the beef lasagna, my friend got pumpkin ravioli both were fabulous! Dont miss this place!
I had an incredible dinner at piccolo forno.

Amazing food and friendly Italian staff!
Great food, one of the best italian places in North Beach!!
Amazing birthday bash! Recommend the Arabiatta and pana cotta. Best Italian restaurant in the area and amazing service!
We absolutely loved the patio seating! Such a great atmosphere, and our waiter was wonderful. I enjoyed a good glass of red Cabernet, while my husband enjoyed an ice-cold Peroni. The mushroom ravioli was amazing, and the sauce was absolutely to die for! The lobster ravioli was good, although the lobster sauce was just okay. The bread with olive oil and vinegar was incredible, and the Caprese salad was delicious. We also had the opportunity to give our leftovers to someone experiencing homelessness, which made the evening even more meaningful. Overall, a wonderful dining experience with great service, delicious food, and a lovely atmosphere!
Great Italian restaurant. The food was excellent. Friendly service. Good value for money.

Small restaurant.
Really impressed with the food here. We got some of the homemade pasta and it tasted incredible. Generous portions for the price as well.
We had a great experience at Piccolo Forno! The place was pretty busy with people coming and going, so we waited about 20 minutes for a table, but it was worth the wait!

The staff were friendly and welcoming, and we enjoyed some bread with olive oil while waiting for our food.

We ordered the Ravioli di Aragosta, which was stuffed with lobster and served in a creamy pink sauce, and the squid ink pasta with seafood. The squid ink pasta was a special that you have to ask about to see if it’s available, but definitely worth trying! It was a generous portion with plenty of prawns, mussels, squid, and clams. Both dishes were delicious, and the flavors were really well balanced.

Overall, great food, generous portions, and friendly service. Would definitely come back!
