The owner is a special person like the whole De Gregorio family
Fabulous food, awesome people! This restaurant is an absolute must visit when going to Sorrento.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
UPDATE — NOVEMBER 2, 2026
RESPONSE TO THE RESTAURANT’S PUBLIC REPLY
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Your response provides a very specific account of the transaction, but several details directly contradict what I experienced.

First, let me explain exactly how the change was handed to us.

A male employee was holding a large handful of coins in one hand and placed them directly into my mother’s open palm. There were clearly far more than 15 coins. Because of the sheer number of coins, I initially assumed that I had received the full €8 in change. I did not count them individually at the counter.

Shortly after leaving your restaurant, I went to another shop and purchased two rain ponchos for a total of €8, using the coins I had just received.

Before paying, I carefully counted and organized those coins. I grouped them into €1 amounts, using either ten 10-cent coins or five 20-cent coins per group. I was able to make five such groups, totaling €5, with six 10-cent coins (€0.60) remaining.

In other words, the total change I received from your restaurant was €5.60, entirely in coins, not €8.

To pay for the rain ponchos, I used €5 worth of those coins together with a €5 banknote that I already had before entering your restaurant. I paid €10, received a €2 coin in change, and kept the remaining €0.60.

Let me be absolutely clear: the €5 banknote was mine from the beginning. Your restaurant never gave me a €5 banknote. I received only coins.

Furthermore, your response explicitly states that the €8 change consisted of a €5 banknote and €3 in 20-cent coins. That would mean exactly 15 coins, all of them 20-cent pieces.

However, I received no €5 banknote, and the coins I actually received included numerous 10-cent coins. Your description is therefore inconsistent with both the amount and the denominations I received.

I understand that you claim your automatic cash-handling system prevented you from reversing the payment and allowing me to pay by card. However, that is a separate issue. It does not explain why I received €5.60 instead of the €8 I was owed.

I am adding this clarification because your public response does not accurately reflect what happened.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
ORIGINAL REVIEW
(Written before the restaurant’s response)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Our bill was €72, and I paid €80 in cash. After waiting quite a while, I received my change entirely in 10-cent and 20-cent coins. Receiving dozens of tiny coins for just €8 was surprisingly inconvenient.

I asked if I could reverse the cash payment and pay by card instead. I understand this may not always be possible, but the staff member simply said they didn’t know how to do it, without even checking with another colleague, despite more than six staff members being present.

What concerned me most was discovering, after returning to my accommodation, that the coins added up to only €5.60 instead of €8. I was €2.40 short.

I acknowledge that I could have checked the change before leaving, but counting dozens of small coins on the spot was not easy. Customers should also be able to trust that their change has been counted correctly.

I cannot know whether this was an honest mistake. However, receiving incorrect change, combined with the lack of effort to help, left me with a very poor impression of the restaurant.

I hope management takes this seriously and improves both cash handling and customer service. If you pay in cash, I strongly recommend counting your change before leaving.
Dear Customer,

We are quite surprised by what you have stated in your review, as we clearly remember the situation.

The change you were entitled to was €8, consisting of a €5 banknote and €3 in 20-cent coins, as unfortunately we did not have any larger coin denominations available at that moment.

We therefore find it very strange that you claim to have received only €5.60, considering that you were given a €5 banknote along with numerous 20-cent coins.

We also clearly remember that, after seeing the large number of coins you received as change, you asked to have your cash returned so that you could pay by card instead. Unfortunately, we were unable to accommodate this request because the payment had already been processed through our automated cash register system, which did not allow us to reverse the transaction in that way.

We would like to emphasize that we always handle payments with the utmost care and transparency. We believe it is important to clarify what happened, especially when a review could call into question the honesty and professionalism of our staff.

We are truly sorry for this situation and for any inconvenience it may have caused. It was certainly never our intention to create any difficulties, and we sincerely hope that this incident will not overshadow your positive experience with our food.

Kind regards,
La Cantinaccia del Popolo
You're going to have to wait in a long line, but it's the line to reach pasta heaven. The atmosphere is spectacular, as is the service, but the food is absolutely incredible—the best place I've eaten in Italy.
Highly recommend. Food and service are superrr.
It is almost the most friendly restaurant through out the whole Italy. Every staff is nice and is caring. The food is also super nice. The last beef dish and octopus salad is must tried. Only the seafood pasta is a little bit too salty.
Terrible service! They act like they're doing you a favor. The food is just average. We went based on the reviews but were disappointed.
I've had the pleasure of eating there twice.

I wouldn't look anywhere else because of the delicious food and great service.
We had dined here twice during our stay in Sorrento; each time was a splendid experience with both the food and interacting with the friendly staff.
We came early, around 5 pm to avoid the wait and were seated within 10 minutes. Our party of 6 chose a variety of dishes from the menu to dine “family style” to enable sampling a wide range of flavors on the dishes selected.
The pasta was exceptionally good, including the gnocchi.
Go for anything seafood which is absolutely fresh and deliciously prepared.
Service was prompt even on a busy night. We could see the kitchen staff busy at their respective stations from our table which added to the overall dining experience.
Our meal was quite good and memorable. At the end of our meal, we were offered each a parting shot of limoncello. Since most of the women in our party do not drink alcohol, the men benefited.
Ciao!
Our 40th anniversary trip was coming to an end and we went to La Cantinaccia Popolo for dinner. We had to wait a bit but well worth the wait. The atmosphere was great and food and service awesome. Highly recommend this resteraunt on your list to try.
Simply delicious and authentic!!

Highly recommended! But you should definitely come hungry for the pasta dishes.

Excellent value for money! 👍

Reservations required for dinner!
A little gem in Sorrento, a place so divine,
Where every dish is a delight, and every moment shines.

From the moment you walk in, you feel right at home,
With warmth and kindness that make you never want to roam.

The service is outstanding, the recommendations just right,
And the food? Absolutely extraordinary, a true Italian delight!

The quality is exceptional, the prices surprisingly fair,
A dining experience made with love, passion and care.

Would I come back? One hundred percent, without a doubt!
Would I recommend it? Two hundred percent — that’s what it’s all about!

La Cantinaccia, you’ve stolen our hearts. ❤️🇮🇹
